Skyhawks Edged Out in Two Close Games Against Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks played clean defense in the field on Saturday afternoon, but they could not wake up their bats as they ended up on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep against the Thomas University Night Hawks through scores of 1-0 and 2-1.

Game One:

It was a battle of two pitchers where Point starter Alyssa Burrows matched Thomas ace Baileigh Herrera nearly pitch for pitch. The teams went scoreless into the ninth inning before the Night Hawks' Grace Hodges poked a walk-off RBI single to the shortstop.

Two of the Skyhawks' four hits came off the bat of Chelsey Hogsed. Taylor Gajdik and Alexa McCoy also slashed hits against Herrera, Thomas' only pitcher of the game. Burrows matched her well in the circle for Point, working 8.2 innings while scattering seven hits and allowing just the single run.

Game Two:

The Skyhawks were on the verge of being shutout again, but trailing 1-0 and down to their final out, Sarah Hinely ripped a triple to right center field, sending Mackenzie Diaz home from first base. On that same play, Hinely was tagged at home plate to end the game in dramatic fashion.

Thomas pitcher Cameron Clontz only surrendered two hits through her seven innings. Taylor Gajdik also went the distance in the circle, allowing a mere three hits while stacking five strikeouts.

The Night Hawks produced their runs in the second and third innings with Ashlyn Powell singling in a run and Paisley Wallace racing home on a throwing error by Gajdik. It was the Skyhawks' only error of the ballgame.

Point is now bound for Alabama with two games on the docket against University of Mobile. They'll play at 3:00 and 5:00pm EDT at the UM Softball Field.
