Skyhawks Score 12 Combined Runs in Doubleheader Losses to Brewton-Parker

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks put up a valiant effort on Friday afternoon, but they suffered two losses 10-9 (10 innings) and 8-3 against the Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons at Brewton-Parker Softball Field.

Game One:

The Skyhawks got down to business in the first inning with Chelsey Hogsed reaching on an error and Anna McMahan singling. Both runners were scored on an Avery Lee RBI groundout and a base hit from Alexa McCoy.

The Barons came roaring back in the home half of the second with a five-spot. With the bases loaded, Tori Wright ripped a double to bring home all three runners and make it 3-2 Brewton-Parker. Wright's trip on the basepaths was short-lived, as Destiny Lucas tripled just one at-bat later. Anna Green's RBI line drive dropped into shallow left field in a play that moved relief pitcher Kendall Holbrook into the circle for starter Chloe Mitcham.

Down to their last two half innings at the plate, the Skyhawks kicked the door down in a sixth inning that involved six runs on eight hits. Alexa McCoy sliced an RBI triple in a day where she went 3-for-5 and Caroline Bagwell produced her lone RBI on the way to a 4-for-5 stat line. Six batters each got at least an RBI as Point crept ahead 8-5. Brewton-Parker tilted the momentum back in their favor with three runs in that same frame.

With extra innings needed, MaKenzie Gilliland raced home on a fielder's choice from Sarah Hinely in the tenth which pushed the Skyhawks in front 9-8. Two outs away from a Point victory, pitcher Taylor Gajdik faced an unfortunate sequence. Wright bashed the tying RBI triple and Destiny Lucas had the final swing for the base knock that won the game 10-9 for Brewton-Parker.

Game Two:

The second game of the day saw Brewton-Parker display a more dominant presence with one run in the first inning and seven in the third. That third frame saw 12 plate appearances for the Barons where they sparked four hits and took advantage of two Point errors. Two runs were walked in, and three runners were left on base.

The Skyhawks went on to record a run in each of the final three innings. Anna McMahan, Sarah Hinely and Alexa McCoy each hit singles that plated runs. McCoy held a team-best three hits, and she was followed by Hinely's two.

Point outhit Brewton-Parker 7-5, but eight runners being stranded was the critical factor for the Skyhawks. Alyssa Burrows got the call in the pitching circle and worked all six innings for Point.

89 miles separate Brewton-Parker from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, which is where the Skyhawks will play tomorrow against the homestanding Stallions. The doubleheader's first pitch will be tossed at 2:00pm EDT.
