Skyhawks Break Even in Doubleheader Against ABAC

TIFTON, Ga. – After a deflating 1-0 loss to begin Saturday's doubleheader, the Point University Skyhawks made up for the slow start with a 6-3 victory over the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fillies at Filly Field.

Game One:

Point only managed two hits across their seven trips to the plate. Chelsey Hogsed singled to start the game and the Skyhawks were held off the bases until Makenzie Gilliland hit a double to send Alexa McCoy to third base in the seventh inning. The Skyhawks were down to their final out and ABAC pitcher Tess Rollins put the game to bed on a flyout.

Skyhawks pitcher Alyssa Burrows took the loss in what was otherwise a solid outing in the circle. She allowed just one run on four hits, with the Stallions' lone strike coming in the second inning on a Hannah Capps RBI base knock. The game only saw two strikeouts, with both being committed by Point.

Game Two:

It was scoreless softball leading into the third inning where Point grabbed a lead they'd never surrender. Sarah Hinely reached on an error and later scored, and Alexa McCoy smacked a single that scored two runs and made the score 3-0. The Skyhawks finished with six runs on eight hits and did not commit an error, a defensive showing that mattered as the game tightened late. Hinely helped drive that effort from the top of the lineup, scoring twice, while Chelsey Hogsed added a hit, was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate once.

Skyhawks starter Taylor Gajdik worked 6.2 innings, allowed seven hits and three runs, struck out four and earned the win on 83 pitches. Lindsey Paul took the loss for Abraham Baldwin after 5.2 innings, with Point pressuring the defense throughout and benefiting from five Fillies errors.

The Skyhawks created even more separation at the top of the seventh. Caroline Bagwell reached on an error, and a string of defensive miscues helped Point add three more runs. Bagwell, Hinely and Aubryn Sward all came around to score in the inning, pushing the lead to 6-0 and giving Point what looked like full command heading to the bottom half.

Abraham Baldwin made themselves difficult to be put away. Kinley Snider tripled to spark the seventh-inning rally and later scored on another triple, this time by Alli Eidson. Shelby Smith followed with an RBI single, and later in the inning Ansleigh Darby added another run-scoring knock after an Emily Turley single helped keep the pressure on, trimming the deficit to 6-3. But the comeback stopped there after Kendall Holbrook rounded things out in the pitching circle, just needing one out to earn the save.

After dropping two close games against them in March, the Point Skyhawks seek vengeance against the Thomas University Night Hawks in their rematch this Tuesday, April 14. Players will take the field at West Point Park for a 3:00pm doubleheader.
