Skyhawks Can’t Solve Opposing Pitching in Doubleheader Sweep by Thomas University

WEST POINT, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks kept both of their games within reach on Tuesday afternoon, but the Thomas University Night Hawks pitching staff prevented them from advancing baserunners as they fell 4-0 and 3-1.

Game One:

The Night Hawks' 4-1 win formed around a complete game in the circle from Baileigh Herrera, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks across 7.0 innings on 102 pitches.

The only strike on the scoreboard from Point occurred in the bottom of the seventh on Anna McMahan's RBI single to right field that moved Sarah Hinely home from third. The scene was set just beforehand with Chelsey Hogsed finding left field for a base hit to load the bases. The other Skyhawks hits were driven by Aubryn Sward in the second and Laura Fendley in the fifth. Each of Point's four knocks were singles.

Alyssa Burrows grinded out a full seven innings as Point's pitcher, leaving with four runs allowed on nine hits, three strikeouts and a walk.

Game Two:

Point was held scoreless in the second game as Thomas used a first-inning RBI single from Grace Hodges and two sixth-inning insurance runs to claim a 3-0 win.

The highlights for Thomas came early and late. Ava Nunez started with a double to left field in the top of the first, then scored on Hodges' single to third for a 1-0 Thomas lead. The Skyhawks stayed within a run behind starter Chloe Mitcham for much of the afternoon, but Thomas added running room in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Bradleigh Lott lined an RBI single to center to score Ashlyn Powell, and Kinley Libby followed with a pinch-hit RBI single to left that brought home Lott for the final margin.

Mitcham worked 5.1 innings for Point and allowed three earned runs on 11 hits. Taylor Gajdik threw 1.2 innings, showing zeroes across her stat line for the day with the exception of one strikeout.

Point generated five hits and drew four walks but could not break through against Thomas starter Cameron Clontz, who went 6.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. The Skyhawks' most productive outing was in the third inning, which featured base hits from Anna McMahan and Alexa McCoy. Point loaded the bases from there before the side was retired.

The Skyhawks look to turn the tide this weekend against Faulkner University, who rolls in to West Point Park this Saturday, April 18 for games at 2:00 and 4:00pm EDT.
